Telescope Shops in London

I recently took the long journey down to London from up North to try and find myself a new telescope. Whilst you can buy telescopes online, sometimes it’s much better to go and see them in person to try and decide on which telescope is best for you.

So, I packed my bags and got on the 4 hour train from Leeds to London to have a look around some of the astronomy shops in London. Unfortunately up in Leeds, we’re a bit short on astronomy and science shops, so it was nice to take the day out and have a look around the shops. I didn’t really intend on buying anything specific, but I was sure that I’d have a good look around and make sure I didn’t leave any stone unturned.

I also wanted to scout the place out for Astrofest, which takes place at the start of Feb each year. As of now, I’m not sure if I’m going to venture down, but I am considering it.

Telescope Shops in London.

Unfortunately, the Widescreen Centre (which is where I previously went for my last telescope) is no longer in the same location. It’s moved out to near Cambridgeshire. I’ve seen a lot of companies doing this recenty. I think it’s mainly because of the expensive retail costs in London, so you can’t really blame them for moving so far outside of the city.

Anyway, here’s a couple of the telescope shops that I managed to visit.

Microglobe

Microglobe was the first place that I visited when I got to London. This is mainly because it was the easiest to get to – it’s right by Marylebone station. So, you don’t need to worry about travelling a long distance to get there. You can walk it in about 15 minutes.

Microglobe is generally a camera shop, but they do have a small selection of scopes and binoculars too. I did ask about which telescope I should go for in my situation, but they didn’t really have any ideas. I decided to head out of the city centre a little bit and go to a bigger store.

Telescope House

To get to Telescope house, you have to venture quite a bit outside of London. But once you get there, it’s totally worth it. It probably has one of the best selections of telescopes in the UK, so if you’re in London or the area, it’s definitely worth your time heading down there and seeing what they’ve got.

In the end, I didn’t buy anything from Telescope House. But, it was definitely worth the visit as the owner couldn’t have been more helpful

Conclusion

Overall, I’ve got to be honest and say that whilst telescope house was great, I much prefer to buy my stuff online. This way, you can be sure that you know every little detail about a telescope before you buy it. If you’re going to the shop, you’re relying on the knowledge of the people there (telescope house great, microglobe not so much!). But all in all, it was a great day out!
